Google News Invades The European News Market

After a controversial start in the United States, Google is now expanding its news-accumulating system in Europe. The internet giant has already signed contracts with eight news agencies from all over Europe. Leading news agencies from Spain, Greece, Portugal, Belgium, Hungary, Austria and Switzerland will thus be able to use google as a host for their news, and google will get the possibility to surround the news with contextual ads. How the revenues would be shared remains unclear. This development however does not suit major international news agencies and newspapers who see their traditional business models endagered by google’s news-aggregating service. How important is the diversity of information for the internet society? This question will be solved in the nearest future, as users will be the ones to choose between traditional information sources and google’s news aggregator.
