Buying Democracy?

Talking about the media in Russia has never been an easy topic. Especially when it comes to the Putin-critical newspaper “Novaya Gazeta” often associated with the murder of the investigative journalist Anna Politkovskaya (1958-2006). It is once again the notorious paper to make the headlines, by accusing the Putin’s party’s youth formation “NASHI” of trying to bribe the chief editor Valeri Shiryaev. According to his statement, a “Nashi” activist approached him personally and claimed to represent the interestes of powerful russian oligarchs.

Dimitriy Krestovski, the name of the activist, offered him millions of roubles in order to change the editorial line and publish some “articles of interest”. After he was turned over to the police and the case was made public, “NASHI” vehemently renounced his status as an activist, by claiming that Krestovski had left the formation an year ago.

In other words: Good boy gone bad. ..
