Commercial Television Carrying PSB’s Costs in Spain

Exactly 2 weeks ago, Spain’s PM Zapatero announced the government’s plans to reduce the advertising volume on the RTVE public service channels drastically. The question back then was how to compensate the missing revenues and who is supposed to carry uncovered expenses of the public service broadcaster.

Today, Spain’s government came up with a proposal: the commercial broadcasters. According to the masterplan, they will have to pay a charge of 3 % of their total revenues, in order to support Spain’s PSB. Telecommunication companies like Telefonica, which  provide audiovisual services as well, will be taxed with 0,9 % of their income.

The proposal is still to be negotiated with the private companies. We’ ll be looking forward to their “positive” reactions.
