Newspaper Subscribtions for French Youngsters for Free

A day after the EU Commission officially denounced state aid for the newspaper industry in Sweden, the French ministry of culture announced the first concrete measure of Sarkozy’s press saving package.(600m per 3 years) This will be the provision of gratis subscriptions for adolescents in France. Thus, citizens between 18 and 24 will have the possibility to chose a favourtite newspaper and receive it one year for free. The main idea of the initiative is to educate future target groups into reading regularly and thus develop a future consumer segment for quality press. How reasonable the funding of the press industry is remains questionable:

Many experts argue that it  would make more sense to fund quality journalism than a technologically obsolete distribution method of news and information. One simply has to try to define quality journalism.
